Miami Mayor Announces First Person to Accept Bitcoin for Salary Payment

Francis Suarez, the mayor of Miami, tweeted on Tuesday that he would "lead the way" and be the first among the city's civil servants to accept Bitcoin as payment for their salaries, and that he would "use Bitcoin 100% of the time."

Suarez, a staunch supporter of Bitcoin, has been advocating for Miami to become a new digital financial center. Earlier this year, he said he planned to add Bitcoin to the city's balance sheet and use it to pay municipal workers' salaries and taxes.

The Miami mayor, who is also an attorney and holds a position at a private equity firm, appeared to be referring to his public sector salary, which as of 2018 was $97,000, in his tweet.
