Sri Lanka sets up committee to explore blockchain technology and crypto mining, including Mastercard and PwC executives

Sri Lanka has set up a committee to explore the introduction of blockchain technology and crypto mining to achieve digitalization through a proposal. The proposal requires the committee to report to the cabinet its findings on bills, rules and regulations related to encryption and blockchain, and to study the regulations and initiatives of countries such as Dubai, Malaysia, the Philippines, the European Union and Singapore, and propose a suitable development framework for Sri Lanka.

The eight members of the committee include Sandun Hapugoda from international fintech giant Mastercard and Sujeewa Mudalige from PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), as well as Rajeeva Bandaranaike, CEO of the Colombo Stock Exchange, and Dharmasri Kumarathunge, director of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, from traditional finance. The remaining four members represent the Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (SLCERT), the Ministry of Information, the Information and Communications Technology Authority (ICTA) and the Presidential Committee.
