The Chivo kiosk, which resembles a Bitcoin ATM, is one of about 200 kiosks in El Salvador as part of the government's push for Bitcoin as legal tender. President Bukele hopes that crypto ATMs will eventually be "popular" across the country, but he also said that people will not be forced to use Bitcoin.
It is reported that municipal workers have evacuated the area after receiving threats, and then protesters burned furniture in a store in the square. In fact, before the Bitcoin law came into effect on September 7, it faced fierce resistance from many protesters and street demonstrations.
