Honduras and Guatemala consider launching digital currencies

After Salgado officially recognized bitcoin as legal tender on Tuesday, central bank officials in Honduras and Guatemala said on Wednesday they were also considering launching digital currencies, with the goal of eventually introducing them into the economy, including through a central bank digital currency.

Wilfredo Cerrato, governor of the Central Bank of Honduras, said: “After obtaining the approval of the board of directors, the Central Bank of Honduras has also recently launched a study to determine the feasibility of preliminary trials to issue an autonomous digital currency or central bank digital currency.”
