The United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) said its management of seized cryptocurrency assets and crypto-related investigative procedures need improvement, according to an internal audit report released Thursday by the agency. The audit was led by Mary Lloyd, a cybersecurity and technology expert at the agency. It found that postal inspectors “lack standardized cryptocurrency training,” that communication between inspectors and cryptocurrency fund schemes is inconsistent, and that it is reconsidering the way it handles crypto-related investigations. Additionally, the accounting software used by USPIS to track cryptocurrency transfers during its investigation was found to have “data integrity issues,” including duplicate transactions that led to inaccurate records. The report said USPIS should develop a “comprehensive cryptocurrency training program” for its examiners, “develop written procedures for managing and overseeing state wallets,” fix accounting systems and improve communication between examiners and cryptocurrency fund programs. |
