Foxconn's overseas factory was hacked by hacker software and 1,804 bitcoins were extorted

Recently, according to foreign media reports, Foxconn's parent company Hon Hai Group's Mexican factory was attacked by the ransomware "DoppelPaymer". Hackers stole some unencrypted files, encrypted them, and asked Foxconn to pay 1,804 bitcoins, or $34.97 million at the current bitcoin price of $19,386, to obtain the decryption tool.
On December 8, DoppelPaymer chose to make some documents public, including business documents and reports.
The Foxconn facility attacked this time is the CTBG MX production facility in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. This facility was put into operation in 2005 and is mainly used to assemble electronic equipment and transport it to North and South America. Currently, the official website of the production facility has been paralyzed.

The attackers had succeeded several times before and launched a website in February this year to publish internal documents of victims who were unwilling to pay the ransom. In March this year, after Visser Precision, a manufacturer of parts for the automotive and aviation industries, was attacked, its customers SpaceX, Tesla, Boeing and many other customers were affected, including supplier information, data analysis reports and legal documents.
It is worth mentioning that the manufacturing industry is becoming a "hot commodity" in the eyes of such hackers. In August 2018, the ransomware Wannacry caused some factories of TSMC, the world's largest chip foundry, to stop production for three days.
A senior information security expert told the media that due to the upgrade of smart manufacturing, more and more factory industrial control systems are being integrated with external IT networks. These industrial control systems are related to production, and are areas that companies dare not easily allow information security companies to transform. In the future, more manufacturing companies may be exposed to the risk of ransomware. (Penguin)
