Jack Dorsey details Twitter’s blockchain strategy at Oslo Freedom Forum

When Twitter and Square CEO Jack Dorsey spoke at the virtual 2020 Oslo Freedom Forum on Friday, he said blockchain technology is the future of Twitter.
“Blockchain and Bitcoin point to a future, to a world where content exists forever,” Dorsey said. “We are no longer in the content hosting business, we are in the discovery business.”
In short, Dorsey wants the nonprofit Blue Sky to create an open Twitter protocol where users can contribute and access data, rather than a centralized service where the social media platform hosts content on its site.
"Blue Sky is a nonprofit that is completely independent of Twitter," Dorsey said. "We will be a client of it so that we can build a compelling service and business that anyone can access and contribute to."
He added that the nonprofit still plans to hire for at least five positions tasked with creating a public blockchain platform.
“The most fundamental thing is, you see this in Bitcoin and blockchain,” Dorsey said, describing the shift from centralized service providers to a diverse network of participants. “The keys are going to be increasingly in the hands of individuals.”
As for what we’ve seen so far with Bitcoin Twitter, Dorsey spoke generally about the importance of protecting user identities, and Twitter staff are increasingly relying on AI and machine learning tools to help identify inauthentic user behavior, aka propaganda.
“I take very seriously the distinction between anonymity and pseudonymity,” he said. “Pseudonymity is about establishing an identity … and we want to protect that,” he said.
The famous Twitter hack took place in July 2020, when the platform suffered its worst attack in years. A 17-year-old hacker is still on trial in Florida on multiple fraud charges for breaking into the accounts of some of the world’s most famous people and demanding Bitcoin payments.
"When it comes to security, we're not going to be perfect, it's a constant race," Dorsey said. "The more keys we give to individuals, the more secure we are."
