When the mainnet was launched, IPFS was even more popular. Some people thought it would be a legend, creating a wealth empire with a market value that is N times that of Bitcoin. Some people thought it was a huge revolution, the basic protocol of the third generation of the Internet, web3.0. Others thought it was a great invention and a milestone in the progress of human civilization. IPFS was covered with countless bright labels!

IPFS is not a project or a token, it is a network transmission protocol. When it comes to network transmission protocols, it is not difficult for us to think of HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol). What are the differences between the new and old transmission protocols? What different experiences can IPFS bring us?

HTTP is familiar to everyone, because when you start using the Internet, the first thing that appears on the address bar of your browser is HTTP. As the basic protocol of the Internet, HTTP not only reduces the cost of publishing information, but also gets rid of various forms of control over the dissemination of information, making information acquisition freer and easier. However, HTTP also has many disadvantages. First, its network runs on interconnected nodes. If there is a problem with the connection, the connection between sites will be interrupted and access will be impossible; if there is an emergency on the server, the data is likely to be lost forever. Secondly, the storage security is poor, and there is a risk of being copied and tampered with; the storage cost is very high, because the server cost is huge, the same file is likely to be stored repeatedly, resulting in a huge waste of network resources; the storage stability is poor, and it is difficult to save permanently. Third, its network operation relies on the central server. Once it is invaded, a large amount of user data will be intercepted. Fourth, as the number of users continues to increase, the network will gradually slow down and even cause congestion.

IPFS is a peer-to-peer distributed file system. Through the protocol, files stored on IPFS can be quickly accessed without being affected by firewalls. Any resource stored in this system will only generate a unique address after hashing. The resource can be obtained by opening the address. Moreover, under the protection of the encryption algorithm, this address has the characteristics of being tamper-proof and cannot be deleted. Once stored, it is permanent.

IPFS is a peer-to-peer distributed transmission network, which is completely different from the storage method of http. In the IPFS system, the same file has the same hash value, so the same hash value can be used to access the corresponding file. This hash value is the file address, which can achieve resource sharing without any restrictions. In peer-to-peer network transmission, the access speed will be very fast, and it is almost impossible to have network congestion like in http. IPFS also has a file duplication detection mechanism, which will not cause resource redundancy problems.

By comparison, it is not difficult to find that IPFS has basically overcome all the shortcomings of HTTP, and its future value is immeasurable. It is correct to say that it is a legend, a milestone, or web3.0, but in my opinion, it is like the Himalayas made of gold, with climbers coming in an endless stream.
