Recently, a foreign team published a report on the current status of distributed Web development , and the survey subjects were 600+ Web3.0 developers from various countries.

After comparing the differences between the current network and DWeb (distributed network) in the minds of developers, they came to the following conclusions:

  • DWeb is still immature and cannot be understood by general users so far;

  • In the conception of DWeb, data privacy, sovereignty, and technical resilience are the most anticipated;

  • Among the current Internet protocols, the most worrying one is DNS, followed by the communication layer and HTTP;

  • IPFS and Ethereum are currently the technologies of choice for developers.

Based on this, let’s take a closer look at why Web3.0 needs IPFS and Filecoin?

Web Status

In recent years, network malpractice/negative events have occurred frequently, and the biggest pain point has been exposed: centralized data storage and the adverse effects that come with it - from data leaks to centralized censorship by major technology companies and governments .

  • Five pain points

(68.5%) Personal data leakage

(66%) Review

(65%) Access restrictions

(61%) Advertising based on personal data

(53%) User data stored by applications

But in fact, for users, no matter how many disadvantages the current network brings, Web2.0 has actually met our needs very well, such as convenient social networking and quick access to information; the adverse effects brought about by these conveniences only indirectly bother us and are not noticeable.

This is the key reason why the development of Web3.0 is limited to a small range: the development of Web3.0 is driven only by the awareness of developers and is not understood by general users .

As written in the previous article, Filecoin’s paid retrieval still has a long way to go to replace the current network. (For details, please refer to “How does paid Filecoin replace the “free” Internet?” )

The mission of creating Web3.0

So for the current network, our top priority, or mission, is to gradually change the unhealthy network ecology from the following aspects:

1. (75%) Data sovereignty is returned to users

2. (59%) Protecting data privacy with more anonymous methods

3. (56%) Technical resilience to disruptive events

4. (51%) Use cryptography to protect security

5. (42%) The right to anonymous access to resources

Solution

To achieve this, developers believe that the following technologies are crucial (at least there is no better one at the moment):

1. (55%) P2P communication protocols

2. (54.5%) Content-addressable storage

3. (51%) P2P file sharing

4. (47%) Decentralized DNS

5. (46%) Privacy-focused networks

IPFS & Filecoin

Of course, many projects have already begun to adopt these key technologies for their own construction. For developers, they prefer these:

1. (36%) IPFS

2. (25%) Ethereum

3. (14%) DAT

4. (13%) ActivityPub

5. (12%) Libp2p & WebTorrent

IPFS is a decentralized communication protocol that hopes to replace HTTP. The P2P, content-addressable, encryption and other technologies it uses can well protect data privacy in network communications and resist censorship.

Its slice preservation and transmission technology, as well as redundant storage, are more capable of resisting catastrophic disasters, such as natural disasters or human shutdowns.

Filecoin is a data trading market based on IPFS and blockchain technology. Its storage and retrieval functions not only protect the privacy of data and return the ownership of data to individuals, but also protect the value of data and allow owners to profit from the data.

It can be said that both the technology used by IPFS and the functions that Filecoin can achieve perfectly match what developers want to solve and use, and are also what Web3.0 needs most.

40% of the choices are inevitable.
