How far is Ethereum 2.0? Today, the first Ethereum 2.0 test network with mainnet configuration is released

On April 15, the Ethereum 2.0 construction team Prysmatic Labs released the Ethereum 2.0 mainnet configuration testnet Topaz.

Prysmatic Labs said in the announcement that just two years ago, they began the journey to implement Ethereum 2.0 and have achieved three important test network implementation milestones: Ruby, Sapphire and Diamond. These milestones reflect their vision of how to help bring Ethereum to the world. Prysmatic Labs announced today the restart of the final plan for Ethereum 2.0 Phase 0: Topaz test network.

The Topaz testnet is currently unique because it represents a full mainnet configuration for Ethereum 2.0 Phase 0. In the previous testnet, Sapphire, we targeted the mainnet size but used a smaller 3.2 ETH deposit. For Topaz, validators must deposit a full 32 ETH on the Goerli ETH1 testnet to participate. In keeping with our original vision, Diamond represents the mainnet version of Prysm in Ethereum 2.0.

The Topaz testnet is now accepting genesis deposits. Tomorrow, Prysmatic Labs will begin closing Sapphire validators and start sending new genesis deposits. If you want to become a genesis validator, you need to send a deposit before 00:00 UTC on April 16, 2020, when Prysmatic will begin sending deposits en masse to launch the testnet.

Regarding this latest progress in the implementation of Ethereum 2.0, Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin retweeted and commented:

eth2 testnet with mainnet configuration. Note though that this is probably not likely to be a "multi-client testnet" yet, as we'll probably do a reboot or two soon to give more chances to test genesis. But it's still great progress, great work @Prysmatic Labs.

Vitalik later said that the significance of the Topaz test network is like the Olympic test network of Ethereum 1.0. This is enough to show the importance of the Topaz test network.

The Ethereum blockchain was officially opened to users in July 2015. Ethereum had previously launched nine versions of open test networks for proof of concept, the last of which was Olympic, for developers to explore how the Ethereum blockchain would work after it was launched.
