538 million user data sold on the dark web; Weibo responded: Already reported to the police

Recently, a user discovered that 538 million Weibo user information was being sold on the dark web, of which 172 million contained basic account information and were sold for 0.177 bitcoins. The account information involved included user ID, number of Weibo posts published by the account, number of fans, number of followers, gender, geographic location, etc.

In response to this, Weibo security director Luo Shiyao posted a Weibo response saying: "The leaked mobile phone number was violently matched through the address book upload interface in 2019, and the rest of the public information was captured from the Internet."

At the same time, Luo Shiyao said: "After discovering the abnormality in some of the data that was swiped in 2019, the loopholes were immediately blocked. We called the police immediately and handed over the relevant information to the police after collecting evidence. At the same time, we have been tracking down the black and gray industries that sell information online. User privacy is of paramount importance, especially when it comes to mobile phone numbers."

On the morning of March 19, “安_云舒”, former director of the Alibaba Group Security Research Lab and CTO of Meian Technology, reposted a Weibo post saying, “Many people’s mobile phone numbers have been leaked, and you can find out their mobile phone numbers based on your Weibo account… Someone has already found my mobile phone number through the Weibo leak and added me on WeChat.”
