Is the Central Bank’s Digital Currency Research Institute signing an agreement with Huawei a step closer to legal digital currency?

[Interchain Pulse News] According to Huawei, on the afternoon of November 4, Fan Yifei, member of the Party Committee and Deputy Governor of the People's Bank of China, and his delegation visited Huawei's Shenzhen headquarters for research. The People's Bank of China Clearing Center and Huawei signed a strategic cooperation agreement, and the People's Bank of China Digital Currency Research Institute and Huawei signed a memorandum of cooperation on financial technology research.

Huawei's press release highlighted the core business innovation solutions of the Kunpeng ecosystem, distributed databases, and network equipment based on self-developed chips, as well as the innovative results of cutting-edge information technology topics in China's financial sector launched by Huawei and some financial institutions based on the above technologies.

These technologies form the basis for cooperation between Huawei and the central bank. Huawei's press release also specifically emphasized that Fan Yifei affirmed the progress made by Huawei's chips and databases.

It is worth noting that the director of the Central Bank Digital Currency Research Institute, Mu Changchun, and the deputy director, Di Gang, both participated in the signing of the memorandum of cooperation with Huawei. The Central Bank Digital Currency Research Institute is conducting research and development of legal digital currency, and Mu Changchun and Di Gang have repeatedly expressed their support for the central bank's legal digital currency DC/EP.

One can’t help but think: Will the central bank’s legal digital currency DC/EP use Huawei’s database technology?

According to public information, Huawei started database technology prototype research in 2008 and created the world's first AI-Native distributed database that supports both x86 and Kunpeng hardware architectures, including GaussDB OLTP database and GaussDB OLAP database.

GaussDB OLTP database is a fully transparent distributed database that supports x86 and Kunpeng hardware architectures. Based on an innovative database kernel, it provides high-concurrency transaction real-time processing capabilities, two-site three-center financial-grade high availability capabilities, and distributed high scalability capabilities. It has 98% compatibility with Oracle's commonly used syntax and supports offline/online migration.

GaussDB OLAP is a distributed database with analysis and mixed load capabilities. It supports x86 and Kunpeng hardware architectures, row storage and column storage, and provides PB (Petabyte) level data analysis capabilities, multi-mode analysis capabilities and real-time processing capabilities. It is used in data warehouses, data marts, real-time analysis, real-time decision-making and mixed load (HTAP) scenarios.

According to the above description, Huawei's distributed database system can support the operation of the central bank's digital currency, including high-concurrency data processing, distributed data computing, and comprehensive analysis capabilities.

However, when Interchain Pulse asked several people at Huawei whether this cooperation was related to the issuance of the central bank's legal digital currency, they all responded that they were not aware of it.
