Beijing prosecutors approve arrest of employee who stole 100 bitcoins from company

Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, March 25 (Reporter Xiong Lin) Zhong, an employee of an Internet technology company in Haidian District, Beijing, took advantage of his position and used administrator privileges to insert code to modify the application in the company's server to steal 100 bitcoins from the company. The reporter learned from the People's Procuratorate of Haidian District, Beijing on the 24th that the procuratorate approved the arrest of the suspect Zhong in accordance with the law on suspicion of illegally obtaining computer information system data.

The reporter learned from the Science and Technology Crime Prosecution Department of the People's Procuratorate of Haidian District, Beijing that the suspect Zhong was an operation and maintenance engineer of a certain technology company. During routine maintenance, the data in the server was found to be abnormal, and then it was found that someone tried to hack into the company's server and tried to steal bitcoins through hacking. After eliminating the abnormality, Zhong used the administrator's privileges to log in to the server and inserted a piece of code to transfer the company's 100 bitcoins to the bitcoin wallet registered on a foreign website. In order to avoid tracking, Zhong used the private wallet function of the website and put 10 bitcoins into the private wallet. This function was later confirmed to be set by a phishing website, and the 10 bitcoins deposited could not be retrieved. After the incident, Zhong returned the remaining 90 bitcoins to the company. According to the victim company, on the day of the incident, the online transaction price of 100 bitcoins was more than 2 million yuan.

Prosecutor Ji Jingling, who is handling this case, stated that according to the Criminal Law of the People's Republic of China and relevant laws and regulations, the criminal suspect Zhong violated national regulations and used technical means to obtain data stored in computer information systems. His behavior has violated the provisions of the Criminal Law and is suspected of illegally obtaining data from computer information systems. The procuratorate has approved the arrest of the criminal suspect Zhong in accordance with the law.
