Bitcoin test network mined 3.7MB block, further confirming that Segregated Witness increased block size

Segregated Witness (SegWit) is still a somewhat confusing topic among Bitcoin enthusiasts. According to a Bitcoin testnet block explorer, a 3.7MB SegWit block was mined a while ago. This is quite unusual, but there is no reason to worry. There will always be exceptions, and it seems that very large SegWit blocks will appear from time to time in the future.

SegWit blocks can be much larger than 2MB

Last night, a block explorer stumbled upon a 3.7MB SegWit block. Although there are some unusual blocks occasionally, this discovery is still quite rare. This also further verifies the claim that SegWit can effectively increase the block size . For some reason, some Bitcoin enthusiasts believed that the design of the solution SegWit would still limit the block size to 1MB, but now it seems that this is obviously not the case.

What’s even more interesting is that this particular block only contains 468 transactions. The rest of the data is all related to SegWit information. But if it contained 3.7MB of transactions, this would be very worrying. This just shows that this abnormal block will be processed according to SegWit regulations, it does not mean that there is anything wrong.

One Reddit user brought up the idea of how this block was carefully created. Considering that most of the data consists of SegWit multi-signature transactions, this idea has some merit. It also shows that SegWit can make the block size higher than 2MB if necessary. That said, people will continue to nitpick why this block is so large given the small number of transactions. Things like this always spark interesting debate, that's for sure.

In addition, this shows that SegWit is a positive solution to Bitcoin's scalability. A 1.7MB block was found on the Bitcoin test network, which contained more than 8,000 transactions. It is impossible for a 1MB block to accommodate so many transactions. In addition, the block showed a transaction fee of 26.07 satoshis per byte.
