The U.S. Department of Commerce is hosting a major event to discuss the use of blockchain technology for digital copyright.

The event, scheduled for Friday, is organized by the Commerce Department's Internet Task Force, with support from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, the Bureau of International Trade and the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

The group is dedicated to exploring a range of issues, including copyright, digital privacy and cybersecurity.

The U.S. Department of Commerce will broadcast the event live, the link is here. According to the agenda released by the Department of Commerce, the event will be held at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's office in Silicon Valley.

The discussion was not surprising, given that the idea of blockchain technology being used for digital copyright has been floated by several startups. The idea is that creative works can be linked to transactions or digital assets on an immutable ledger. From there, the history of the work can be traced back to its origin.

The day-long gathering will begin at 1:30 p.m. and include a panel session on “Registration and Copyright Expression Language,” which will focus on the use of blockchain technology.

Subsequent breakout sessions will focus on blockchain and smart contracts, and if no specific projects are proposed, the event will include a half-hour technology preview.

The Ministry of Commerce said in its press release:

“We will discuss the possibility of jointly operating digital registries and standard-setting work in this area, taking into account relevant emerging technologies (e.g. blockchain technology, open source platforms). At the same time, we will also explore possible ways to guide the adoption of these technologies and their integration into online markets.”

The event marked the Commerce Department’s first public foray into the tech sector, but its representatives have already taken an active approach to the industry, with a high-profile appearance at an industry gathering at Bretton Woods last summer.
