IBM develops blockchain locker network to make lost items impossible

IBM and a Singaporean startup are teaming up to develop a blockchain-based network of storage lockers.

FreshTurf plans to use this technology to track the delivery process of goods, connecting dedicated lockers and distributed ledger platforms. The two companies said that the goal of this project is to create a network of lockers in Singapore to provide customers with a "final stage" solution to make the tracking of package logistics more convenient.

This is one of the early projects launched by IBM BlueMix garage. BlueMix garage is a global innovation network center that provides a platform for startups and existing companies to research blockchain and other technologies. The BlueMix network is part of IBM's grand blockchain application strategy.

When the two parties officially announced the project, they hoped to create a mechanism that would allow customers to track the logistics status of their packages in real time:

Blockchain technology not only enables greater transparency and helps users track the status of packages in real time through their mobile phones, but also allows stakeholders to participate in freight transactions in a highly secure and trusted environment.

The linked locker system is still in the development stage, with IBM providing blockchain technology solutions. However, neither party has yet indicated when specific commercial use cases will be launched.

Blockchain technology has long been seen as a savior for the express delivery industry. Earlier this year, the United States Postal Service (UPS) released a report detailing the feasibility of blockchain for tracking package status and also proposed connecting delivery vehicles to a similar network.
