German power company Enercity now accepts Bitcoin for electricity bill payments

As a global payment method, Bitcoin is just "a step in the digital future."

Using Bitcoin for everyday purchases is still somewhat difficult. The average person on the street is not going to buy cryptocurrency to pay for computer parts or book a trip to Italy.

But a German energy provider, Enercity, provides a good use case, as they now accept Bitcoin payments, which means users can pay their electricity bills directly with Bitcoin.

In most countries, Bitcoin enthusiasts will be delighted to be able to use Bitcoin for daily payments. Until this becomes a reality, middlemen services will be used. We can thank forward-thinking companies like Enercity for making Bitcoin payments a big step closer to reality.

Enercity Embraces Bitcoin Payments

The company is said to be thinking in a very different direction than its competitors. Their executives see the potential of decentralized networks and transactions in people’s daily lives in the future. Bitcoin, as a global payment method, is just “a step in the digital future.” This move is an interesting attempt by the energy provider.

While most people agree that Bitcoin can be used as a payment tool, it is limited in real-life use cases. It is a matter of perspective, and cryptocurrencies are not attractive enough for mainstream users. The option to pay for electricity bills with Bitcoin may change this perception.

Enercity is able to accept Bitcoin payments thanks to its partner PEY GmbH. The Hannover-based company will accept Bitcoin payments on behalf of Enercity and convert them into fiat currency. While the company will not hold Bitcoin funds, it is good to see that they are at least offering an option.

Although Bitcoin is a global currency that cannot be controlled by banks, Enercity sees no problem in accepting it. In fact, their preference for decentralization is the main reason why they accept cryptocurrencies. They are the first energy company in the world to accept Bitcoin payments. Depending on how this project develops, other service providers in Germany will follow in their footsteps.
