French aircraft maker Airbus joins Hyperledger blockchain project

Rage Review : Linux-led blockchain initiative Hyperledger has added a new member - French aircraft manufacturer Airbus, whose members also include financial giants such as IBM, Intel and JPMorgan. The addition of Airbus shows that the application of blockchain technology is no longer limited to the financial and medical fields, but can also be used in the aviation field. Just in May, blockchain startup ShoCard cooperated with aviation IT company SITA to jointly develop applications for identity authentication management.

French aircraft manufacturer Airbus has officially joined the Hyperledger project, the Linux-led blockchain initiative.

Toulouse-based aircraft manufacturer Airbus, which beat Boeing to sell more than 1,000 planes last year, now wants to “actively join” Hyperledger, whose members also include IBM, Intel and JPMorgan.

Founded in 1970, Airbus manufactures and sells the A380, the world's largest passenger aircraft.

Brian Behlendorf

Brian Behlendorf, executive director of Hyperledger, said that Airbus’s participation shows that the application of blockchain technology is no longer limited to the financial and medical fields. He said:

“The success of the project will be driven by the expertise and guidance of our members, and I look forward to working with the bright minds at Airbus to advance blockchain technology.”

According to the project’s GitHub page, two Airbus employees currently serve on its subcommittee, and Hyperledger mailing list communications indicate that the company has established an internal emerging technologies and concepts working group to explore blockchain technology.

Airbus did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The announcement reflects the aviation industry’s growing interest in blockchain technology. In May, blockchain startup ShoCard partnered with aviation IT company SITA to develop applications for identity management.

Hyperledger was launched last year and has attracted about 80 members to its corporate and startup community team. The Linux Foundation manages member information, but member information is not fully public.
