Regulators, lawmakers join blockchain leaders at Bretton Woods gathering

Rage Review : Sir Richard Branson held a blockchain summit on his private island, Necker Island, UK, gathering industry insiders to participate in technical discussions. As usual, it caused various controversies, but the ideas of many pilot projects did come from this. The United States also recently gathered a group of legislators and regulators to camp in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, USA, while discussing formal guidelines in the blockchain field. Participants included educational institutions, standard organizations, trade commissions, and the Ministry of Commerce, and various government agencies were highly involved.

This week, regulators, lawmakers and entrepreneurs will once again go camping in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, with the goal of gathering to develop formal guidelines for the blockchain industry.

The event, hosted by consumer democracy advocacy group Consumers' Research, runs from Sunday, July 10 to Wednesday, July 13, with plans to release the final white paper at payments industry conference Money2020 in October.

Confirmed participants include members of government agencies, the Federal Trade Commission, the Department of Commerce, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, U.S. Senators Mick Mulvaney and David Schweikert, and educational institutions Coin Center and MIT Media Lab.

Joe Colangelo

Joe Colangelo, CEO of the organizer, said that blockchain and distributed ledgers have broad impact across industries, but regulatory issues may hinder the widespread application of the technology. "This collaboration will provide a model for Bitcoin and blockchain-based businesses while addressing the concerns of regulators."

The event stems from a paper released at last year’s North American Bitcoin Conference, which focused on identifying opportunities and barriers to emerging technologies.
