Finland creates smart container based on blockchain technology

Imagine if the world’s shipping containers were smart enough to know where they were being shipped to. Although all orders would be stored on a distributed ledger,   But there is absolutely no one involved. This is the area of ​​technology that Finland is exploring, they want to create smart shipping boxes based on blockchain technology.

Although the concept may sound strange, it is not necessarily impossible. In the second half of this year, a new project will be held in Finland, which will completely change the logistics of transportation. Smart containers may sound sci-fi, but it is possible to achieve them with blockchain technology. After all, blockchain technology should not be used only for the Bitcoin protocol, as it is changing the world as we know it.

Using blockchain technology to create smart containers

The key challenge is to move from the concept stage to the prototype stage. The container will be embedded in the database and published on the blockchain in different forms. The information record will also be entered into it, and the storage solution will make an independent decision based on this - whether the container should be transported from A to B.

These shipping containers should be able to determine their routes and schedules, as well as the order in which all the goods should be shipped. But what is most interesting is how these containers will "learn" from past experiences and thus improve their functions. This will take machine learning to a whole new level.

As one might expect, the technology used in this logistics trial is very similar to automated driving technology. During the test, the car will not be driven by a driver, but must be driven autonomously. Humans are still exploring logistics and will apply technology to any humble cargo transport task.

The concept is that the recipients will be able to track their shipping boxes from the time they are dispatched until they are received. In addition, they will be able to intervene in the shipping box dispatcher and make changes if needed. Unlike most people think, this project will have a minor impact on departmental employment. Only the job descriptions will change.

The blockchain-based logistics project will begin in autumn 2017 and run until 2019 .

Companies and universities will assist in the project, with IBM serving as a technical partner. It is unprecedented for blockchain technology to be applied to the logistics industry on such a large scale.
