Japanese technology giant Hitachi plans to set up a fintech research laboratory in the United States to focus on developing blockchain applications. Hitachi will set up the fintech lab next month in partnership with its technology innovation arm based in Silicon Valley, California. Hitachi said the new research laboratory is a 'communication bridge' between it and its customer base for various R&D programs. Hitachi is one of the world's largest integrated multinational groups, involved in a wide range of industries, including home appliances, computer products, semiconductors, industrial machinery and other products. Zhu Shaoren, Vice President of Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Asia Pacific, said: "Hitachi is committed to developing innovative and exciting storage solutions to meet the ever-changing needs of consumers in the ever-changing digital world." Blockchain, as a hot cutting-edge technology nowadays, is very consistent with Hitachi's long-standing value of "achieving growth through social innovation." In a statement, Hitachi said:
The move is the latest step by Hitachi, a member of the Linux Foundation-led Hyperledger Project, toward blockchain applications. Satoshi Oshima, a senior researcher at Hitachi, is a member of the Hyperledger project’s technical steering committee and is responsible for Hitachi’s internal blockchain research projects.
