Bitcoin ATM thieves hit Atlanta tobacco shop

"When the suspects encountered store employees, one of the suspects brandished a handgun and fired one round into the floor before taking the machine. The suspects then fled in a late 1980s red Chevrolet Caviler with an unknown license plate number."

The video captured the suspect's initial dismantling of the ATM, which store manager Amanda McCollum said was secured with bolts. The sudden shooting also caused a moment of panic among store employees, as shown in the video.

McCollum said she initially thought they were responding to a problem with the machine itself. After the shooting, McCollum said the robbers fled, and were met by two other suspects in a car, according to an Atlanta police incident report.

“He fired a shot into the floor and ran with the machine to his car at the back of the store and fled,” she told CoinDesk.

The incident may have been planned for some time. According to McCollum, two people came to the store last week to ask about the Bitcoin ATM. Then they stole a wallet in the store's office.

A representative from the Atlanta Police Department said so far there is no indication who was behind the robbery.

“There are no leads at this time in this case,” the department’s chief said in an email.
