Bitcoin companies join forces with law enforcement agencies to form blockchain alliance

Many people may never have heard of Bitcoin. Those who have heard of Bitcoin may have learned about it from some news about Ponzi schemes related to Bitcoin. Although these news have nothing to do with Bitcoin itself, they still seriously affect the image of Bitcoin. Over time, a stereotype has been formed in people's minds: Bitcoin is unreliable and should not be touched.

With the gradual expansion of the Bitcoin ecosystem, the continuous improvement of various infrastructures, and the formation of the industrial chain, it is becoming increasingly necessary and urgent to solve the problem of Bitcoin's negative image.

Recently, Coin Center (a well-known Bitcoin non-profit research and advocacy center) and the Chamber of Digital Commerce (Digital Chamber of Commerce) led a number of well-known Bitcoin startups and several US law enforcement agencies to form the "Blockchain Alliance" to create a Bitcoin forum for government and private collaboration, with the goal of promoting government and public understanding of Bitcoin. These companies include BitFury,   BitFinex, BitGo, Bitnet,   Bitstamp, Blockchain, Circle,   Coinbase, CoinX, itBit, Kraken, Noble Markets and Xapo. Law enforcement agencies include the U.S. Department of Justice, the FBI, the Secret Service, the Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. Marshals Service and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. International agencies may join in the coming months.

The blockchain alliance also has support from several Bitcoin Core developers and布赖恩•福德, director of MIT’s Digital Currency Initiative.

Jason杰森•韦恩斯坦, former U.S. Deputy Attorney General and a member of BitFury’s board of directors, will serve as the blockchain alliance’s first director.

Main Objectives

Jerry杰里•布里托, executive director of Coin Center, and韦恩斯坦said one of the blockchain alliance’s main goals is to change bitcoin’s negative image.

To achieve that goal, the alliance will create a mailing list of companies to facilitate law enforcement inquiries, hold regular conference calls and host large gatherings to bring together industry members and government officials.

Brito explained:

“Essentially, it is a forum for public-private collaboration, to facilitate liaison with law enforcement, and to facilitate dialogue between the bitcoin industry, academia and developers and the government on bitcoin regulation.”

Weinstein said these numerous bitcoin companies were the driving force behind the formation and advancement of the alliance.

“This time, the entire Bitcoin industry took the initiative instead of waiting for the government to guide us. This is the most critical point.”

The role of alliances

Weinstein went on to emphasize that the alliance’s function is not to help law enforcement investigate the Bitcoin industry. Rather, it serves as a forum for “high-level dialogue” to focus on the development trends of Bitcoin technology and its applications in the real world.

In a statement,派瑞安妮•博林, president of the Chamber of Digital Commerce, said the alliance would help foster productive discussions between the bitcoin industry and law enforcement.

“There is a problem with people’s understanding of Bitcoin, which is a barrier to Bitcoin entering the mainstream market. Therefore, open dialogue with law enforcement and policymakers is very necessary to help alleviate society’s anxiety about this technological change.
