Peruvian presidential election to use blockchain solution

A Peruvian political party is making blockchain part of its presidential campaign platform.

Perú Posible, a center-leaning political party led by former President Alejando Toledo, is preparing for the upcoming presidential election next April . Hillmer Reyes, policy director for Toledo’s campaign and a member of the party’s national committee, told Peruvian business newspaper El Comercio that the party has proposed using blockchain to help alleviate social issues and fight corruption.

In an interview with CoinDesk, Reyes outlined how policy proposals are drafted in the run-up to the election.

He said the party had been considering the technology for several months, along with Bitcoin and Ethereum, explaining:

“It’s really new. It’s still in the development stage. But we’re starting to try these things out, and in the long run, if everything goes well, these things will appear in the judicial system, the land registry, the party system, and it will also provide more transparency to the government itself, help to decentralize decision-making, and prevent corruption.

Reyes pointed to the technology as a potential solution to what he called the problem of social struggles arising from disputes over agreements. Reyes addressed the issue in a May blog post, suggesting that smart contracts could help enforce contentious agreements.

He also pointed out that smart contracts should be used to enforce national policies, otherwise it might fall prey to corruption.
“We see these smart contracts as a way to automatically enforce these policies that are written down in black and white, but because of the political agenda, the contracts are not being implemented,” he said.

Plans for blockchain will continue to be discussed at the competition as proposals mature and the competition is approached . Reyes said further details will be released later this year .
