POS terminal giant Ingenico expands Bitcoin payment range globally

On October 7, Bitcoin payment company BitPay has partnered with payment giant Ingenico to allow physical stores around the world to accept Bitcoin payments through their POS terminals.

The payment solution, which was unveiled today at the Blockchain Week conference, was developed by BitPay and will initially be installed on Ingenico’s ICT250 terminal.

According to the company, this payment solution will be compatible with the majority of Ingenico terminals running the Tellium operating system.

Speaking about the integration, Miguel Angel Hernandez, General Manager of Ingenico Iberia, said in a statement:

“Participating in such an important project will allow the Ingenico Group to demonstrate its leadership in the payment sector and to offer users a secure and reliable payment method such as virtual currencies.”

After the merchant enters a fiat currency sales price, a QR code is generated, which the customer can then use to pay with Bitcoin on the Ingenico terminal. The QR code can be scanned by the customer through the Bitcoin wallet app.

Currently, Ingenico has more than 5,000 employees worldwide and its annual revenue in 2013 reached 1.37 billion euros.

Bitcoin payment scope expands to the world

Earlier this year, Ingenico chose to partner with Paymium to allow retailers in Europe to accept Bitcoin as a payment method.

A BitPay spokesperson said the new partnership will make bitcoin payment solutions available to merchants around the world, and revealed that all BitPay merchants that currently accept traditional fiat currencies (through compatible Ingenico terminals) will now also be able to accept bitcoin payments.

Tony Gallipi, Executive Chairman of BitPay, said:

“We are delighted to be working with Ingenico Group, one of the leading payment processors both offline and online. This integration will help us expand Bitcoin payments to thousands of retail merchants around the world.”
