On June 5, CNBC reported that according to research from Google Trends, online searches for the term "Bitcoin" have dropped 75% since the beginning of 2018, and have been halved in the past three months alone. The decline in online searches coincides with the price of bitcoin, which has fallen about 50% this year, according to Nicholas Colas, co-founder of Datatrek Research and a Bitcoin analyst on Wall Street, as quoted by CNBC. In an email to clients, Colas added that "a new narrative is needed (for Bitcoin) to rebuild global attention." Google Trends analyzes the popularity of certain web searches over different periods of time. For a particular search term, a value of 100 is considered the most popular. In early January, Bitcoin's popularity was 37, but by early June it had dropped to 9. Google searches for other cryptocurrencies are also declining, according to CNBC. Ethereum, the second-largest cryptocurrency by market cap, has fallen 70% since the beginning of 2018, while Bitcoin Cash has lost 82% and XRP has dropped 87%. Still, searches for EOS, the fifth-largest cryptocurrency, have jumped 97% in 2018. |
