After the hack was disclosed, Eric Voorhees, CEO of digital currency exchange ShapeShift, said the company believed the incident was a case of insider theft. In a Reddit post, Eric Voorhees said the company suspected the hacker was a former employee, but he did not reveal the person's name or position. Voorhees wrote:
The exchange announced the hack last week, with an undisclosed amount of digital currency stolen from wallets connected to its servers. Wallis further pointed out that the refund of pending orders is still being processed and is tentatively scheduled to be processed within 24 hours. After publishing the latest update, Voorhees later wrote that refunds would be withheld to prevent fraud. The CEO went on to reiterate that a detailed investigation report into the incident would be released in the future, but did not provide a specific date, only saying "in due course." According to the latest update, ShapeShift is currently working with Toronto-based blockchain consulting firm Ledger Labs to investigate the hack.
