Microsoft announced its support for Bitcoin with great fanfare at the end of 2014, but now, Microsoft has quietly removed support for Bitcoin from the Windows 10 Store. Microsoft has not yet officially given a statement on this, but Microsoft has updated the Windows Store FAQ. It shows that the Windows 10 Store and Windows 10 Mobile Store no longer accept Bitcoin payments for purchases: "The Microsoft Store does not accept Bitcoin. You can no longer add Bitcoin to your Microsoft account, but the Bitcoin balance in your account can still be used to purchase products in the Microsoft Store, but the account Bitcoin balance cannot be converted into US dollars." Strangely, the Microsoft FAQ page still contains a paragraph on how to "recharge your Microsoft account with Bitcoin". There are many different interpretations of the Microsoft Store's discontinuation of support for Bitcoin. Some believe that this is due to the current block size of Bitcoin, while others believe that this is because Bitcoin has not been widely adopted as expected. So the most likely reason is that the number of users using Bitcoin to trade in the Microsoft Store is very small, and Microsoft has no reason to continue supporting this currency with very small transaction volume. |
